I originally thought to try Wattpad because I had read of other authors using it and I wanted in on some of that publicity. It was a sort of selfish idea, to use this thing that other people had developed and nurtured, so promote my own fiction. But in the process of uploading Children of Atlas to Wattpad, I became sort of attached to the model. I could imagine what it would feel like if I had uploaded the story piece-by-piece as I was writing it.
Of course this wouldn't have worked. The story didn't come together linearly, buy in bits and pieces. But over the next week I kept going back to another story. I had intended to write a novella that follows the character Edwina, who won't make her appearance in the Atlas world until book two or three, but whom we get hints at through Sebastian's dialog.
The story of what happens to her before she enters into the series is arguably more interesting than the role she will play. And unlike Children of Atlas, it is very episodic, and makes for a great serial. So 3am last night I started it. I banged out 1000 words in an hour or two and posted it right then. Immediately that story got more views than the first page of Children of Atlas had gotten in the entire two weeks.
It is clearly inspired by the meduim and by making it available in almost real-time, as I write it. I'm excited to see where this goes. I would like to write a chapter a day, but we'll see about that. Here's the link if you want to check it out. http://www.wattpad.com/story/33417697-edwina-opens-her-eyes
It follows Edwina as she tries to get a handle on her terrible fate, being trapped inside the bodies of a series of robots, forced to perform menial tasks that no longer matter, and trying desperately to get a message out to someone who can help her, before she jumps into the next robot body and forgets all over again.
I'll post updates on twitter and/or facebook as it progresses.
